Private College Can Be Affordable

Iowa Private Colleges Are More Affordable Than You Think

The published tuition price is only part of the story.

Most students attending ICF member colleges receive a combination of institutional scholarships, federal aid, state grants, and philanthropic support that significantly reduces the actual cost of attendance.

For many families, the final net price of attending an Iowa independent college is far more affordable than expected—and often comparable to other higher education options.

Financial Aid Options

Start with the FAFSA

The first step is completing The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is used to determine eligibility for federal aid programs, the Iowa Tuition Grant, a state aid program, many institutional scholarships, and other forms of financial assistance. Because some aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, students should complete the FAFSA as early as possible.

In addition to federal and state aid, students should actively pursue scholarships offered by ICF member colleges and universities, local organizations, community foundations, employers, businesses, and national scholarship programs. Many students receive assistance from multiple sources that, together, can significantly reduce college costs.

Understanding the full range of financial aid options including scholarships, grants, work-study opportunities, and student loans can help students and families make informed decisions and maximize available funding opportunities.

ICF Scholarships

Expanding Opportunity Through Philanthropy

Through the generosity of donors, businesses, and foundations, ICF helps provide scholarship support to students attending member colleges across the state.

Each year, ICF distributes scholarship funding to its member schools that helps reduce financial barriers and expand access to independent higher education opportunities in Iowa. Your support helps students pursue degrees, strengthen Iowa’s workforce, and build stronger communities throughout the state.

Federal Financial Aid

Federal Aid Can Help Reduce College Costs

Federal financial aid can be an important part of a student’s college funding plan. When combined with scholarships, grants, and state aid, federal programs can help significantly reduce the cost of attendance.

Federal aid opportunities may include:

  • Pell Grants for eligible students
  • Federal Direct Student Loans
  • Federal Work-Study opportunities
  • Additional federal assistance programs

Eligibility for most federal financial aid programs is determined by completing the FAFSA. Students should submit the FAFSA annually to maximize available aid opportunities.

Institutional Scholarships & Grants

Support Directly From Member Colleges

ICF member colleges invest heavily in student financial aid through merit scholarships, talent awards, need-based grants, and other institutional support programs. These scholarships often represent the largest portion of a student’s financial aid package and can substantially reduce tuition costs for students and families. Students and families are encouraged to contact the financial aid office at the colleges they are considering to learn more about available scholarships, grants, and personalized financial aid opportunities.
